Alabama has had a newspaper called the Alabama Sentinel before — just not
this one. A weekly paper by that name was published in Tuscaloosa from about
1825 to 1829, back when Tuscaloosa served as Alabama's state capital. A
separate paper, the Alabama State Sentinel, ran in Selma from 1853 to around
1863, and another edition published under the same name in Montgomery in the
1860s. All three were 19th-century print publications, and "Sentinel" was one
of the most widely used newspaper names of that era — adopted by hundreds of
papers nationwide, not just in Alabama.

Today's Alabama Sentinel is a separate, independent publication launched in
June 2026 by Sloss Digital, LLC. We share a name with those long-closed papers
— not a lineage. We have no ownership history, editorial continuity, or
institutional connection to any of them.
