Huntsville Unveils 60,850-Square-Foot Recreation Center at John Hunt Park

The City of Huntsville has officially expanded its public recreation infrastructure with the grand opening of the John Hunt Park Recreation Center. On Monday, Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle led a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the new 60,850-square-foot facility, located at 3035 Leeman Ferry Road. Designed to serve as the northern anchor for the sprawling 435-acre park, the indoor-outdoor complex provides local residents and regional sports organizations with extensive, modern spaces for basketball, volleyball, and pickleball.

Facility Features and Athletic Amenities

Situated on an 8.5-acre footprint within John Hunt Park, the development introduces elite-level athletic accommodations to the local community. The main indoor gymnasium is engineered for municipal versatility and high-capacity use. The hardwood space can be seamlessly configured into four high school regulation basketball courts or eight high school regulation volleyball courts.

Beyond the primary athletic courts, the interior blueprint is designed to support daily community health and administrative operations. The building includes a dedicated fitness room, multi-purpose community rooms, concession stands, and administrative office space.

Outside the main building, the city has heavily invested in infrastructure to accommodate the rapid growth of racquet sports across Alabama. The exterior features include:

• 24 competitive play pickleball courts, built with a covered structure and specialized lighting for year-round, day-to-night play.
• One elite play pickleball court, designed specifically for championship-level matches and spectator events.
• Direct connectivity to the broader walking trails and outdoor green spaces of John Hunt Park.

Community Impact and Regional Economic Strategy

Local officials noted that the multi-million-dollar development is part of a broader strategy to enhance quality-of-life resources across the region. Mayor Tommy Battle stated that the opening reinforces the municipal commitment to providing accessible public assets to taxpayers. Echoing this sentiment, Huntsville City Council Member Bill Kling noted that the facility's completion reflects a sustained period of advocacy for residents citywide.

The complex was designed by the architectural firm William M. Boehm & Associates, while the Fite Building Company oversaw the physical construction. The City of Huntsville Parks & Recreation Department will directly manage the site's day-to-day operations. Residents are currently able to use the department's online registration platform to browse rental availability, view schedules, and enroll in open-play sessions.

According to Parks & Recreation Director James Gossett, the site will balance daily local access with large-scale event hosting. By securing a venue capable of accommodating multi-court athletic events, Huntsville further cements its position as a competitive regional destination for youth and amateur sports tournaments throughout the Southeast.
